If you’ve recently read headlines about quartz worktops, silica dust or calls for engineered stone bans, you may be wondering; “Are my kitchen worktops actually safe?”
The short answer is yes. Your installed kitchen worktops are safe to use in your home.
The important distinction, according to the Worktop Fabricators Federation (WFF), is between finished worktops in the home and the industrial fabrication process used to cut and manufacture stone surfaces.
At Rock Revelations, health and safety is taken extremely seriously. As proud members of the Worktop Fabricators Federation, we fully support the latest industry guidance and best practices designed to protect workers, customers and the future of the stone industry.
Understanding the concern around silica
Silica is a naturally occurring mineral found in many materials including quartz, granite, sandstone, ceramics, concrete and tiles.
When stone materials are cut, polished or ground during fabrication, tiny airborne particles called respirable crystalline silica (RCS) can be produced. Long-term occupational exposure to this dust without proper safety controls can lead to serious illnesses including silicosis.
This is why the UK’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has strengthened guidance around stone fabrication processes. The latest guidance makes it clear that dry cutting of engineered stone is unacceptable and that robust dust suppression and worker protection measures are essential.
What the WFF says about installed worktops
The latest guidance from the WFF is very clear:
“There is no health risk to showroom staff, installers or consumers associated with specifying, handling, shipping, installing or using engineered stone worktops.
The Federation also states:
“A quartz worktop once installed is perfectly safe.”
In other words, the risk relates to unsafe manufacturing practices, not to having a quartz or stone worktop fitted in your kitchen.
Once fabricated and installed, these surfaces are inert, stable and designed for everyday domestic use.
Why choosing the right fabricator matters
The real issue highlighted by recent industry guidance is ensuring that fabrication workshops follow proper safety standards.
According to the WFF, reputable fabricators should use:
- Water suppression systems during cutting
- Dust extraction and filtration
- Proper respiratory protection
- Regular worker health surveillance
- Safe workshop cleaning procedures
- Modern CNC fabrication equipment
This is exactly why choosing an established and responsible fabricator matters.
Rock Revelations is committed to maintaining high standards across fabrication, installation and workplace safety. We believe customers should have complete confidence not only in the beauty and durability of their worktops, but also in the professionalism and care behind how they are produced.
The Federation strongly advises homeowners to buy from reputable, professional fabricators who can demonstrate safe working practices and material provenance.
Are quartz worktops being banned in the UK?
No. Engineered quartz worktops are not currently banned in the UK.
While Australia introduced restrictions due to historic poor fabrication practices, UK industry bodies including the WFF have emphasised that the focus should remain on safe manufacturing controls, not banning materials outright.
The WFF also points out that silica is present in many natural and engineered materials – including granite, ceramics and concrete – meaning good dust management is essential across the entire industry.
What about alternative materials?
Many homeowners are now exploring lower-silica or silica-free options, including:
- Ceramic worktops
- Sintered stone
- Certain natural stones
- New low-silica engineered surfaces
These materials can offer excellent durability, heat resistance and contemporary styling while supporting evolving industry safety standards.
The bottom line
Your kitchen worktops are safe to live with and enjoy.
The current industry conversation is about protecting workers during the fabrication process through proper safety measures, training and professional standards – something the WFF and HSE are actively driving forward across the UK stone industry.
At Rock Revelations, we’re proud to be part of that movement as members of the Worktop Fabricators Federation. We believe great craftsmanship should always go hand in hand with responsible working practices, customer transparency and industry-leading safety standards.
If you’d like advice on quartz, porcelain, sintered stone or natural stone worktops, our team is always happy to help.
