When choosing a new kitchen worktop, most people focus on the colour and material, but the edge profile is one of those finishing details that can quietly transform the overall look and feel of your kitchen.
At Rock Revelations, we make bespoke stone worktops every day, and edge profiles are something we advise on regularly. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you choose the right one for your kitchen.
What is a worktop edge profile?
The edge profile is the shape finished along the exposed edges of your worktop. While it might seem like a small detail, it plays a big role in:
● The overall style of your kitchen
● How the worktop feels to the touch
● Practicality, including cleaning and durability
● Safety, especially in family kitchens
Pencil round (single & double)
A pencil round is one of the most popular choices we install. It has a soft, subtle curve that works beautifully in both modern and traditional kitchens.
Single pencil: a light, clean finish
Double pencil: slightly more rounded for a fuller look
Why choose it?
It’s timeless, easy to clean, and very durable – ideal for everyday kitchens.
Bevel edge
A bevel features a clean, angled cut along the top edge. It adds definition without being overly decorative.
Why choose it?
Perfect for contemporary kitchens where you want crisp lines and a modern feel.
Bullnose (half & full)
Bullnose edges are fully rounded (or partially rounded in the half bullnose), creating a softer, more traditional look.
Why choose it?
Great for family kitchens – the rounded edge is safer and comfortable, especially around islands and breakfast bars.
Sharknose
The sharknose is a sleek, minimalist profile often used in handleless kitchens. It creates a subtle shadow line and gives the impression of a thinner worktop.
Why choose it?
Ideal for ultra-modern kitchens where clean design is key.
Ogee & double ogee
Ogee profiles feature elegant curves and are more decorative than standard edges. They’re typically chosen for classic or statement kitchens.
Why choose it?
They add character and work especially well on thicker worktops or kitchen islands.
Mitred edges
A mitred edge isn’t a shape but a fabrication technique. We join stone at a 45-degree angle to create the appearance of a thicker slab.
Why choose it?
Perfect for waterfall islands, breakfast bars and bold design features.
Choosing the right edge profile
When helping our customers decide, we always recommend thinking about:
- Kitchen style – modern, traditional or something in between
- Lifestyle – busy family kitchen or statement design space
- Maintenance – simpler edges are easier to keep clean
- Material choice – some profiles work better with certain stones
Our team will always guide you on what works best for your chosen material, whether it’s quartz, granite or sintered stone.
Edge profiles are one of those details that elevate a kitchen from good to exceptional. Because we fabricate everything in-house, we’re able to offer a wide range of edging options and tailor them precisely to your design.
If you’re unsure which profile is right for your kitchen, we’re always happy to advise.
